My First Blog Post!
Since I am in the thick of editing family sessions I thought that it would only be fitting that my first blog post should be about all of my favorite tips and tricks for preparing for your family session!
So letβs dive right into it!
Which session is right for you?
I offer two types of family sessions to cater to the unique needs and preferences of every family. The first option is the Petite Session, which is 30 minutes long. This shorter session is ideal for those seeking standard posed pictures, capturing those precious moments in a concise timeframe. However, it's important to note that 30 minutes can pass by quickly, especially when coordinating poses. For families with little ones who may be initially shy and require a bit more time to feel comfortable around new faces, I generally suggest opting for the full session.
The Full Session is always my go-to recommendation for all families. With a longer shooting time of up to 2 hours, this session provides plenty of opportunities to capture more detail-oriented shots. It also allows for candid moments to unfold naturally, resulting in authentic and expressive photographs. Whether it's capturing the genuine laughter of siblings or the joy in a child's eyes, the Full Session ensures that no precious moment goes unnoticed.
My goal is to tailor each session to best suit the needs and desires of every family. Whether you opt for the Petite session or the Full Session, you can trust that I will capture the essence of your family's unique dynamics and create timeless photographs that you will cherish for years to come.
Lighting
When it comes to planning your session, it is crucial to prioritize lighting. Unlike weddings; portrait and lifestyle sessions provide you with the opportunity to capture your photographs in ideal lighting conditions. The magic happens during sunset or the golden hour, when the light is soft and flattering, enhancing the overall aesthetic of your photographs. Almost every single one of my sessions takes place during this magical time. In the summer this can be anywhere from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. In the winter months, we adapt to the shorter days, and plan sessions between 2:30pm - 4:30pm to ensure optimal lighting.
I also understand that life can sometimes be unpredictable, with naps, bedtimes, and other commitments dictating your schedule. For those facing these challenges, I like to recommend in-home sessions. In-home sessions not only alleviate the need to plan around the optimal lighting hours, but they also provide you with the comfort of your own surroundings. This setting is particularly beneficial for children who may be on the shy side and require time to acclimate to new environments and people.
Location:
Choose a location that resonates with your family. Whether itβs a local park, a downtown setting, the beach, or even your own backyard, the familiarity and comfort of the setting will contribute to a relaxed atmosphere and natural interactions.
Coordinate, Don't Match:
When it comes to wardrobe choices, aim for coordination rather than identical outfits. Choose a color palette that complements each other, avoiding overly busy patterns. This ensures that the focus remains on your family's connections rather than the clothes.
Communicate Your Expectations:
Before the session, communicate openly with your photographer about your expectations, preferences, and any specific shots you have in mind. A collaborative approach ensures that your vision aligns with the photographer's creative direction.
Prepare the Little Ones:
If you have young children, make sure they are well-rested and have snacks and drinks on hand. A happy and comfortable child is more likely to cooperate and enjoy the session. Consider bringing a favorite toy or snack to keep their spirits high.
Be Yourselves:
The most memorable family photos capture genuine moments and connections. Relax and be yourselves during the session β laugh, play, and enjoy the time together. Authenticity shines through in the final images.
